The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization founded in 1993 to promote environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economically sustainable management of the world's forests.

FSC®'s work is supported internationally by environmental and trade union organisations, representatives of indigenous peoples as well as companies from the forestry and wood-related industries.

FSC forest management certification confirms that the forest is managed in a way that conserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring its economic viability.

There are ten principles that every forest enterprise must adhere to in order to obtain FSC forest management certification. These principles cover a wide range of issues, from maintaining high conservation values to community relations and workers' rights, as well as monitoring the environmental and social impacts of forest management.

FSC also provides a number of criteria associated with each principle to provide practical ways to verify that they are being met.

These principles have been developed to be globally applicable and relevant to all types of forest ecosystems, as well as to a wide range of cultural, political and legal contexts.
